Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTA baseball team started conference play on a good note, beating Georgia Southern 12-5 at home Friday.
The Mavs (12-6, 1-0 SBC) got the scoring started early when
Zac Cook hit a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
Georgia Southern cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning, but UTA broke the game open in the second inning with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Connor Aube,
Will Olson and
Anthony Dominguez brought in runs in the second frame.
UTA got three more in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of hits from Olson and Dominguez to give the Mavs an 8-1 lead.
Georgia Southern (7-9, 0-1) got back into the game with four runs in the top of the seventh, but UTA responded with four of its own in the bottom half to push the lead back up to seven runs.
The Mavs forced Georgia Southern to use six pitchers in the win. Georgia Southern starter Seth Shuman lasted just two innings. He picked up the loss for the Eagles.
Cade Winquest struck out six hitters over six innings to pick up the win.
The teams will return to the field at 2 p.m. Saturday for the second of the three-game series.
