ARLINGTON, Texas – Only four events were contested on the opening day of the 39th Annual UTA Bobby Lane Invitational, but the Mavericks made their presence felt with a pair of big performances on Friday.

Alexus Washington kicked things off by winning the women's hammer throw with a mark of 169-05 (51.63m). It was a personal best for Washington and also ranked as the No. 4 mark in school history.

Diamond Cardona followed in the men's hammer throw by breaking a 14-year-old school record. His throw of 181-04 (55.28m) broke the old mark by nearly six feet and was 11 feet longer than his all-time best. The mark also is listed fifth in the Sun Belt this year.

The men's and women's javelin wrapped up Friday's action. For the men,
Ty Sawka led the way, placing third with a heave of 152-09 (46.57m). UTA's top finisher on the women's side was
Criselda Cruz, who took sixth with a throw of 89-03 (27.20m).

Action on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. with the first field events. Running events are set to begin at 11 a.m. and the last race is slated for 4:40 p.m. Live results will be available at

Tickets for Saturday are $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 6-17. Admission is free for UTA students with a valid student ID as well as for children five and under.
