ARLINGTON, Texas – For a second straight year, UT Arlington tennis will have representation at the NCAA Singles Championship as Guanarteme Nuez was selected to participate to continue his senior season. The tournament will take place on May 20-25 in Orlando, Florida at the USTA National Campus.
Â
Nuez enters the tournament with a 19-12 overall record this season and 13 wins during dual matches. Nuez finished with multiple wins over ranked opponents this season, including a win over No. 11 Jack Lin of Columbia. For a second straight year he was selected to the All-Sun Belt First Team.
Â
"We're very proud Teme," UTA Coach Diego Benitez said. "He deserves to be in that venue. It is a result of his hard work and determination that he has established throughout his tenure at UTA. We cannot wait to go to Orlando and represent the Sun Belt Conference."
Â
Nuez was ranked as high No. 89 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I singles rankings prior to the Sun Belt tournament, earning the conference's automatic bid.
NCAA PRESS RELEASE
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student- athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 started singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
