Mavs Drop Heart-Breaker To Coastal In Extras

ARLINGTON, Texas – Anthony Dominguez hit a pair of homers, but the Mavericks gave up two runs in the top of the 11th inning to fall to the 2016 National Champion Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 8-6, on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

"This was the toughest loss we've had all year," said head coach Darin Thomas. "We had a chance, but just didn't get it done. Things will turn eventually, we just have to hang in there. That's a good ball club over there (Coastal) and they can really swing the bat, but hopefully we can get things turned around tomorrow and get back on track."

With the win, the Chants, who have made 16 NCAA Regional appearances, improve to 28-20-1 overall and 13-11 in Sun Belt play, while the Mavericks fall to 29-21 overall and 15-10 in league play with the series-opening loss. UTA has now dropped eight of their last nine games.

Coastal tied the game up in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk and then scored two runs in the top of the 11th on an RBI triple and a RBI single to pick up the extra-inning win.

Offensively for the Mavericks, DH Anthony Dominguez (2-for-4, 2 HR, BB, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) had himself a day at the plate with a pair of home runs, while Dylan Paul (1-for-5, 2B, 2 RBIs) drove in two runs and Zac Cook (0-for-3, SF, RBI) added another score on a sacrifice fly.

The win went to Coastal's Matt Eardensohn, who allowed just one run on five hits and one strikeout over 5.2 innings of work out of the bullpen after entering the game in the fifth with the Chants trailing 5-2.

The loss went to Andrew Gross (1-2), as the nation's leader in saves (16) gave up three runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a solo home run from Dominguez.

Coastal Carolina answered with a long ball of their own in the next half inning as Mike Koenig launched a 2-run homer to straight-away centerfield that put the visitors in front for the first time at 2-1.

The Mavs added another run in the bottom of the fourth, as Will Olson doubled, then moved to third on a fielding error. A fielder's choice scored Olson from third to tie the game up at 2-2.

UTA regained the lead in the fifth inning. Phillip Childs singled and Connor Aube reached on a throwing error, giving the Mavs runners on first and second with no outs. Zac Cook hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Childs (3-2) and then Dominguez stepped into the box and hit a 2-run blast to right centerfield.

Coastal didn't go away though, and went on to score two runs in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI single and a sacrifice fly (5-4).

Mike Koenig's second homer of the night tied the game up at 5-5 in the top of the eighth. UTA quickly responded in the next half inning with Paul's RBI double that scored Matt Cavanagh (6-5).

Trailing by one heading into the ninth, Coastal got back-to-back singles and then drew back-to-back walks to tie the contest at 6-6.

The Chanticleers two runs in the top of the 11th came thanks to an RBI triple and an RBI single with two outs.

Game two of the three-game set is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
