
Benitez, UTA Agree To Contract Extension

ARLINGTON, Texas – After wrapping up his 14th season as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at UT Arlington, Diego Benitez has agreed to a one-year contract extension.

"Coach Benitez has done a good job building a consistent program during his time here at UTA," Director of Athletics Jim Baker said. "It was made evident again this season with Guanarteme Nuez earning his second-straight bid to the NCAA Singles National Championship. We're excited to keep Coach Benitez as the leader of our program."

Over the course of his career at UTA, Benitez has developed over 100 All-Conference selections between the men's and women's squads, including five Player of the Year honors. He has made four trips to the NCAA National tournament, going to the NCAA Regional in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2016.

This past season, Benitez led both the men's and women's teams to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. He also landed an individual in the NCAA Singles Championship tournament for a second straight year, as Guanarteme Nuez earned the Sun Belt's automatic bid to play in Orlando this season.

"I would like to thank UT Arlington and AD Jim Baker for their confidence in me as head coach of our tennis programs" Benitez said. "We are excited for the future of the teams and we will continue to strive for excellence, aiming for the highest goals."

Benitez was named the Assistant Coach for the men's and women's tennis programs in November 2003, spending three seasons in the role before being name the head coach in February of 2006. Over the course of three years, Benítez helped the Mavericks compile a 37-28 record, which included a 14-2 record in conference play.
