Andrew Gross Taken By Tampa Bay Rays In MLB Draft

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior right-hander Andrew Gross was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 39th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with the 1,178th overall pick on Wednesday (June 5). Gross, a native of Chandler, Ariz., is the 64th player in program history to be selected in the MLB Draft, with the Mavs represented in the draft in each of the last 11 seasons.

Gross came to UTA after two seasons at Yavapai Junior College. While at Yavapai, he appeared in 49 games and had an 11-5 record with 10 saves. As a freshman he led the Roughriders to the Arizona Community Colleges Championship, District Championship and the NJCAA National Championship.

The righty, who was named to the Midseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch List earlier this year, finished his senior campaign with a 2-3 record in 36 appearances with a conference-leading 17 saves (currently tied for 2nd in the nation), posting a 4.11 ERA, .296 opponent batting average and 46 strikeouts in 46.0 innings. In Sun Belt play, Gross had 17 appearances, going 2-2 with nine saves and a 2.40 ERA.

This season, Gross also became UTA's leader in single-season saves with his 15th save in UTA's 6-3 win over No. 19 TCU on April 16. The senior fell one save short of tying the SBC single-season saves record of 18 (Hugh Adams - FAU, 2013).
