ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington head softball coach
Peejay Brun announced the hiring of Miranda Kramer as the new assistant coach. Kramer will serve as the pitching coach for the Mavericks after spending the previous three seasons at Syracuse University.
"From my first conversation with Miranda I felt she would be the perfect fit for our program," said Brun. "She loves the game of softball and her passion to teach this sport to younger players will make her an invaluable asset to our staff. The moment she stepped onto campus, it was as if she had always been a part of our Maverick family. Not only will she help us develop these young athletes on the field, she will be a motivator and mentor for them on their journey to becoming strong and empowered women."
During her tenure at Syracuse, Kramer worked with the Orange pitching staff in all aspects of the game, including creating scouting reports and calling pitches during the game. Under her guidance, the Orange rotation finished as one of the top groups in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2018. Syracuse finished in the Top 50 in the NCAA in ERA (2.35), while ranking second in the ACC in strikeouts (390) and third in opponent batting average (.199).
"I am extremely grateful and humble to have this opportunity at UTA," said Kramer. "I couldn't think of a better place or fit for me in my career. I am so excited to work with Coach Brun, the staff and the team. The program has already had great success and I hope to add to that and continue on moving forward. I can't thank Coach Brun and administration enough for the opportunity and helping me feel right at home from the minute I stepped on campus. I can't wait to be a Maverick."
Kramer led the development of All-ACC pitcher Alexa Romero and All-American Sydney O'Hara. In 2017 Romero became the first Orange player in program history to be named to the All-ACC Freshman Team, recording a 2.79 ERA. The following season, Romero took the next step, leading the country and setting the school single-season record in strikeouts per seven innings (10.9) en route to being gaining NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region and All-ACC honors.
In 2017, Kramer coached O'Hara to an All-America selection, while also finishing as the 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finalist. O'Hara finished the season with 1.86 ERA, 128 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched and finished in the Top 5 in the NCAA in saves and strikeouts per seven innings.
Kramer first broke into coaching in 2014, serving as an assistant coach at West Burlington-Notre Dame High School in Burlington, Iowa. She also spent one season as a student-assistant at Western Kentucky.
She had a decorated playing career, beginning at Purdue University Fort Wayne. While with the Mastodons, Kramer was a three-time All-Summit League First Team selection and set the program records for lowest opponent batting average (.187), strikeout per seven innings (10.15) and career strikeouts (764). She spent her last season at Western Kentucky, where she became the programs fist NFCA First-Team All-American honoree after leading the NCAA in strikeouts per seven innings (12.6).
Kramer will attempt to help Coach Brun build on the success of the 2019 season where the Mavericks finished 36-28 overall (17-10 SBC) and won the NISC Championship for the first time in program history.
