Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – The UTA volleyball team completed a comeback to close out the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, coming back from down two sets to beat Houston 3-2 (18-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-12) Saturday.
"This was a great team effort in pulling of a come from behind victory in a road match," said head coach
J.T. Wenger. "We had great contributions from many people today in many aspects of the game.
Kylie Jedlicka and
Brooke Townsend took some amazing swings in tough situations. As a team, we did a really nice job of adjusting to the game plan as the game progressed. I'm proud of the effort that we put forth when our back was against the wall. We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend, and we are eager to get back in the gym this week and get back to work."
After dropping the first two sets, the Mavericks (2-1) found themselves trailing 17-14 in the third set. UTA closed the frame on an 11-4 run to cut the match deficit in half.
In the fourth set, UTA began to pull away to take a 19-15 lead. Houston (0-3) mounted a pair of pushes, but UTA held off both to take the set 25-22 and send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
The teams played the fifth set almost entirely within a point of the other. After Houston tied the set at 10 apiece, UTA scored five of the final seven points to complete the comeback. The match fittingly ended with a
Brooke Townsend kill. Townsend led all players with 26 kills in the matchup, to go with a team-high three aces.
The Mavs will take their home court for the first time this season when they host the University of Incarnate Word in the 2019 Maverick Classic at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
