MIDLAND, Texas – The UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams are set to begin their fall season as they travel to the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland. Both teams will compete in the three-day tournament beginning on Friday.
"We are looking forward to the tournament," said Head Coach Diego Benitez. "The Midland Open is a great and prestigious event which we are honored to get invited every year."
The women will return three players who saw success at the tournament a season ago. Momoka Horiguchi made a run into the semifinals, while Almudena Boza reached the finals in the consolation bracket. Nanaka Takeuchi won her draw a season ago and will look to defend her title this season.
"Nanaka is coming back to the meet after winning it her freshman year," Benitez said. "All the players are looking forward to measuring their levels with the best competition in the nation."
The women gained valuable experience a season ago, being one of the youngest in the Sun Belt Conference. The Mavs have six players returning to a team that went 16-9 last season, including Carla Pons and Horiguchi, who earned All-Sun Belt Second Team Doubles honors a season ago.
The men's team will have an almost entirely new squad as Eduard Simo, Alejandro Hayen and Miguel Cabrera are the lone returners from a team that went 15-9 in the spring. Â After earning All-Sun Belt Second Team Doubles honors last season, Simo will try to find a groove with a new partner after losing Enrique Pardo to graduation. The Mavs feature five freshmen, all vying for potential playing time.
