ARLINGTON – With less than two weeks before the start of the unprecedented 2020-21 season commences, the UT Arlington men's basketball team announced the rest of its non-conference schedule on Friday.
The non-league docket features an additional seven contests – two at home, one at a neutral site and four on the road. Each of those games are drivable and regionally located in an attempt to help mitigate the potential impacts of travel associated with COVID-19.
As previously announced, UTA will open its season at home in the College Park Center on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m. against Oklahoma State in a matinee affair which will be shown nationally on ESPN2. That Nov. 25 date is the first allowable date of competition for NCAA Division-I basketball this season – a push-back of several weeks from the planned first week of the month.
That change was precipitated by COVID-19, which affected every team's non-league schedule, and that was no different for UTA as its non-conference slate from the spring to early fall looks nearly completely different.
Following the contest with Oklahoma State, UTA will head to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech on Friday, Nov. 27, at 6:30 p.m., and Northwestern State on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 3 p.m. as part of the LA Tech Classic.
The matchup with LA Tech will be the 34th all-time meeting between the two schools, but first since the 2015-16 season. The Bulldogs went 22-8 last season and 13-5 in Conference USA. The showdown with Northwestern State will be the 52nd in a long series dating back to UTA's time in the Southland Conference, and this will be the first meeting since the Mavericks final season in the Southland in 2011-12. The Demons finished 15-15 last year, including a first-round win in the Southland Tournament before the season was abruptly canceled.
After three games in four days to open the season – with the lone off day being a travel day on Thanksgiving – the Mavs will have a few days to recover before heading to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The Mavs and Razorbacks have met eight previous times, most recently in November of 2018. Arkansas posted a 20-12 record last season.
UTA will remain on the road and drive to Oklahoma to face Tulsa on Friday, Dec. 4. That will be the sixth all-time meeting between UTA and Tulsa, with the most recent occurrence coming on Homecoming last November – a 73-59 Maverick win. It will mark the third-straight year UTA and Tulsa have met. The Golden Hurricane finished 21-10 last season and 13-5 in the American Athletic Conference to share the league's regular-season championship with Cincinnati and Houston.
That will conclude a torrid opening stretch for UTA, which will play five games in the first 10 days of the season, including two Power-5 teams and three which won at least 20 games a season ago.
After a week off, the Mavs finally return home and welcome Hardin-Simmons to the CPC on Friday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. It will mark the 40th all-time meeting between the two sides, but first since the 2010-11 campaign.
Another week between games follows for the Mavs, who will head back to Tulsa, but this time to face Oral Roberts on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles secured a 17-14 record last year, and this will be the first meeting between the two teams since the CIT (CollegeInsider.com) First Round on Mar. 20, 2013. The last regular-season matchup took place on Jan. 2, 2002.
The Mavs conclude their non-conference slate at home on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m. versus Howard Payne – the alma mater of associate head coach Greg Young. The contest will mark just the fifth all-time meeting and only the third since 1988.
All game times, dates and even opponents are subject to change with the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19. The maximum amount of regular-season games teams are permitted to play this year is 27 – a decrease from the typical 31.
UTA's 18-game Sun Belt schedule will begin on Jan. 1 at Little Rock. As previously announced, the league switched to a divisional conference schedule in 2020-21; for UTA that means solely home-and-home weekend series with the five other West Division opponents: Little Rock, Louisiana, Arkansas State, Texas State and ULM.
UTA Athletics officials plan to allow a limited amount of fans to attend home games this year. Season tickets start at just $99, and for more information – or to purchase tickets (including single-game tickets) – contact Alex Ware at 817-272-9613 or alex.ware@uta.edu.
