ARLINGTON, Texas – Two Mavericks will continue their baseball career after signing free agent contracts with MLB teams on Sunday night. Senior pitcher Cesar Gomez signed with the Houston Astros, while senior second baseman Zac Cook signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
"Cesar brought it everyday," said head coach Darin Thomas. "We are going to miss his enthusiasm and energy. He has a great arm and has a chance to add velocity at the pro level."
Â
Gomez played two seasons with the Mavericks after transferring to UTA from North Central Texas College following his sophomore season. During the COVID-19 shortened season of 2020, Gomez appeared in eight games in relief effort leading the Mavericks with four saves – 17th in the NCAA. Gomez held batters to a lowly .214 average and picked up the crucial save against #18 Dallas Baptist (Feb. 25) by striking out the side.
"Zac is a very good athlete," said Thomas. "Athletes get better and that is what Zac did every year in our program. I think his best baseball is still ahead of him He is a very versitile baseball player."
Â
Cook finished his illustrious four-year career with the Mavericks with a stellar 2020 campaign. Cook was named the 8th best Senior Hitter according to D1Baseball after slashing .321/.500/.623. Defensively, Cook helped the Mavericks finished in the Top 10 in the NCAA in doubles plays with 16. In 165 career games for the Mavs, Cook hit .294 with 83 RBI.
