BIRMINGHAM, Ala – Cole Klashinsky's big win in the Men's 5,000m highlighted day one of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the
Birmingham CrossPlex. The UTA men currently sit in fifth place with 18 points after five events scored, while the UT Arlington women's team sits in ninth place through four events scored with four points.
Klashinsky secured UTA's first podium finish of the indoor championships, taking first place in the 5,000m with a time of 14:27.75. Klashinsky finished the race nearly seven seconds faster than second place.
After four events in the Heptathlon,
Lucas Van Klaveren (3,012 pts) and
Jorrdyn Dunn (2,587 pts) sit in third place and 11th place, respectively. Van Klaveren recorded marks of 7.36 (60-meters; tied PR), 6.86m (long jump), 12.71m (shot put), and 2.02m (high jump; PR), while Dunn finished with marks of 7.22, 6.79m, 9.92m and 1.69m. The duo will close out the event tomorrow as they compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, and the 1,000-meters.
Connor Butterfield 4:17.23 and
Marquentin Barnes grabbed automatic qualifier spots in tomorrow's mile final with their seventh and ninth place finishes in their prelim heat running 4:17.23 and 4:17.53.
Chidera Agim and
Seth Texada are headed to the finals of the 60m after their performances in the prelims. Agim ran 6.84 to set a new personal-best, while Texada ran 6.86 and tied his personal-best.
Joel Bengtsson and
Medric Roberson advanced to tomorrow's final in the 60m hurdles, recording the first and ninth-fastest times from prelims.
In the 200m, Davontay Kennedy ran a personal-best 21.77 to have the seventh-fastest time in prelims and qualify for Tuesday's final.
The men's Distance Medley Relay
Connor Butterfield,
Sebastian Vidal,
Victor Bocanegra,
Marquentin Barnes) turned in a bronze medal performance running 10:19.28.
Madeleine Rowe turned in the top qualifying time (5.05.50) in the women's mile prelims and will compete for the SBC crown on day two.
Mathilde Ruud punched her ticket to the 800m final, running 2:15.89 in the prelims and turning in the fourth-fastest time on the day.
UTA will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex for day two of the SBC Indoor Track & Field Championships tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m.
