Mavericks Shut Out in Loss to Lamar

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team was shut out against the Lamar Cardinals on Thursday evening, losing 3-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks fall to 5-7 on the year, while the Cardinals improve to 5-1.

This marks the second time in two weeks that UTA has been shut out, losing to UTSA last Saturday by the same score. The Mavericks could only muster five hits on the day.  Josh Minjarez finished with two hits in three at-bats.  Dylan Paul, Tommy Williams and Sam Gotlieb all finished with one hit.

UTA had their opportunities to score, but were unable to plate any runs, stranding nine runners on the bases, including a bases loaded situation. The Mavericks went 0-for-8 at the plate with runners in scoring position, and 3-for-13 with runners on base.

The Mavericks pitching held their own, allowing just three runs.  Carlos Tavera (L, 0-2) picked up the start, tossing 4.0 innings while striking out seven batters. He have up two runs off a two-run home run in the second inning.  Michael Wong pitched the final five innings, allowing just one run off four hits.

A single in the second gave the Cardinals their first baserunner. Lamar made the most of the opportunity, connecting on a two-run home run two batters later to give them the lead.

Down two runs in the fifth inning, the Mavericks used three walks to load the bases.  Connor Aube hit a line drive to center field, but a diving Cardinal was able to corral it and keep the Mavericks from scoring.

The Cardinals used two singles and a sacrficie bunt to put runners at second and third with one out in the eighth inning.  Minjarez wasn't able to get the throw home in time on a slow chopper to shortstop as Lamar scored their third run of the game.

The Mavericks and Cardinals will play their second game of the series tomorrow (March 12) at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
