Mavericks Fall In Extras; Split Series with Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (10-13) fell in the final game of the series against Houston on Sunday, losing 5-4 in extra innings at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park. The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th after the Mavericks took the lead in the top frame.

David Moffat picked up the start for the Mavs, tossing 7.0 innings.  He gave up three runs off four hits while striking out four batters.  Jack Hagan and Logan Austin (L, 1-1) pitched the final two innings.  Austin gave up two runs in the 10th inning.

UTA finished with 11 hits on the day, led by Boone Montgomery's 3-for-4 day at the plate.  Dylan Paul (2), Josh Minjarez (2) and Andrew Miller (2) each had multi-hit days.  Paul led the Mavericks with two RBI on the day, while Connor Aube and Montgomery each added one.

The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board. With two outs, Connor Aube singled to left field before Dylan Paul hit his fourth home run of the year to put the Mavericks up 2-0.

Houston took the first pitch of the second inning and sent it over the right field wall to cut the Maverick lead in half. The Cougars tied the game at two with a bases loaded fielders choice four batters later. With runners on first and third, a double steal allowed the third run to cross home plate.

Dylan Paul used a double a and error to reach third base with one out in the 8th inning. Boone Montgomery singled up the middle with the next at bat to bring Paul in and tie the game at three.

The Mavericks used the international tie breaker rule in the 10th to their advantage.  A sac bunt sent JD Wadleigh to third.  A shallow fly ball to right field gave Wadleigh time to showcase his speed, beating the throw home and putting the Mavs up 4-3.
