Baseball Ends Regular Season At Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - Two teams will battle for a first place title in their respective divisions this weekend, as the UT Arlington baseball team will take on the Georgia Southern Eagles for a three-game set to end the regular season. The Mavericks currently hold a one-game lead in the Sun Belt West over Louisiana, while the Eagles are two games out from South Alabama in the Sun Belt East.

UTA NOTES
  • Carlos Tavera became the 5th Maverick to reach 100 strikeouts in a season. His 101 K's on the year put him 13 behind the record, set by Jason Mitchell in 2010
  • The Mavericks return 90 percent of their innings pitched and 95 percent of their strikeouts from a season ago.
  • Josh Minjarez is closing in on a couple records for UTA. Against McNeese State he broke the all-time games play record, appearing in his 231st career game. His mark of 243 games played is also the 3rd highest active mark in the country. Against McNeese State, he broke the at-bats record and now sits at 871. He has the 6th most base hits (238), 4th most total bases (357), and 5th most home runs (25). Minjarez is also tied for 9th place in career doubles (38).
  • Phillip Childs enters the night with a squad-high 24 game reached base streak, dating back to Texas State on April 2.
  • Over the past 30 games, Andrew Miller is leading the team with a .374 batting average, .593 slugging percentage and 31 RBI.  He is also second on the team in home runs and doubles over that span.
  • Connor Aube entered the season know for his ability to get on-base. While his batting average has dipped this season, he has career highs in home runs (10), RBI (38), and walks (16). He is just 8 bases away from breaking his total bases mark.
  • The 15 inning game against Louisiana on May 14 was the most innings played in a game at Clay Gould Ballpark. The total game time of 4:44 is also  the long game played at the Ballpark since it's inception in 1974.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | GEORGIA SOUTHERN
  • The Eagles are the top offensive team in the Sun Belt Conference. They currently lead in batting average (.285), hits (488), sac flies (26), runs (293) and triples (14). They rank in the top five in doubles (3rd), home runs (4th) and on-base percentage (2nd).
  • Mas McWhorter leads the Sun Belt in hits with 74, which ranks 6th in the country. Teammate Christian Avant is just behind with 70 hits on the season. The two are also tied for the best batting average in the Sun Belt at .372.
  • Relief pitcher Nick Jones leads the nation in saves. He has racked up 15 saves for the Eagles across 24 appearances. 
  • Jarrett Brown has hit four triples this season, which leads the conference and is the 21st most triples in the NCAA.
  • Georgia Southern has two players with double-digit home runs on the year - McWhorter and Noah Ledford. The two are also leading the team with 42 RBI and 41 RBI, respectively. 
SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles and Mavericks have met 17 times prior to this weekend, with Georgia Southern owning a 12-5 record in the series. The two squads last met in 2019 with the Eagles taking the series two games to one.  Georgia Southern leads the series in Statesboro 4-2.
