ARLINGTON, Texas – Three Mavericks were announced as Sun Belt All-Conference selections by the league on Monday afternoon.
Carlos Tavera earned First Team honors as a starting pitcher, while
Dylan Paul and
Andrew Miller earned Second Team honors at first base and utility, respectively. The three selections are the most UTA has had since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014.
Carlos Tavera becomes the first Maverick pitcher to be named First Team All-Conference. Tavera held down the Friday night starter all season with 12 starts on the year. He ranks in the top 10 in the Sun Belt in ERA (6th - 2.94), opposing batting average (3rd - .177), innings pitched (7th - 76.2), strikeouts (1st - 108), batters struck out looking (3rd - 28), hits allowed (6th - 47), runs allowed (6th - 26), earned runs allowed (6th - 25) and doubles allowed (4th – 8).
His 108 strikeouts are the 18th most in the NCAA and he became just the 5th Maverick to reach the 100-strikeout mark and needs just 13 more to break the single-season record heading into the final weekend.
He is ranked 26th in the NCAA with 12.68 strikeouts per nine innings. His 5.52 hits allowed per nine innings ranks 24th in the NCAA. Tavera threw a masterful performance against Little Rock, throwing the first 9 innings of an 11-inning no-hitter. It was the most innings pitched by a UTA player in a no-hitter and marked the first no hitter for UTA since 1983.
Dylan Paul was named 2
nd Team All-Sun Belt at First Base. He has been a key piece in the lineup for the Mavericks, starting all but one game at first base. He has a career-high seven home runs on the season, which ranks third on the team. His 37 runs batted in are also a career-high and puts him third on the Maverick squad. He leads the team with 15 doubles on the season, which is third most in the Sun Belt Conference.
Paul has had 23 extra-base hits this season, tied for the team lead. He has 13 multi-hit games to his name and has 9 multi-RBI games this season. He has driven at least three runs on four difference occasions. Paul came through early in the season when he hit the walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th against Abilene Christian on March 2.
Andrew Miller picked up 2
nd Team All-Sun Belt on a Utility player. He was a key component to the 2021 UTA squad as the senior started all but one game for the Mavericks. He started 38 games in right field, 14 game at catcher, and one game as DH. In Sun Belt Conference games, he is hitting .347 with a slugging percentage of .471. His 42 runs batted in leads the Mavericks and rank 5th in the conference. He has had 15 multi-hit games - 9 of which came against Sun Belt opponents. He leads the Mavericks with 10 multi-RBI performances, including six with three or more.
Miller had a monstrous performance against Kansas on April 21 when he became just the fourth Maverick in UTA history to hit three home runs in a game, while finishing with six RBI. He is one of two players in the Sun Belt to have a perfect fielding percentage with over 100 total chances.
Tavera, Paul, Miller and the rest of the Mavericks will look to bring home a Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship this week in Montgomery, Ala. They will take on Arkansas State (Thur., May 27) and Troy (Fri., May 28) in Pool play in hopes of advancing to the semi-finals on Saturday (May 29).
