Murray’s Under-Par Round Leads UTA In Final Round

MOBILE, Ala. – Madigan Murray recorded her first under-par round of the year with a 71 to lead the UT Arlington women's golf team in the final round of the season-opening University of South Alabama Intercollegiate from the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course.

Murray's round featured three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars as she moved up nine spots from her overnight position to tie for 25th with a three-round 219 (+3) total.

For the second-straight day, the Mavericks improved their score by four shots, this time posting a final-round 299 following a 2nd-round 303 and 1st-round 307. The 909 total placed UTA in 16th place. Sam Houston (833) ran away from the field to win the event by 19 shots over South Florida (852).

All five Mavs posted final rounds of 78 or lower: Kinsey Ray (75), Romina Gonzalez (76), Heidrun Hlynsdottir (77) and Janane Tan (78).
  • Murray – like all of her teammates – started the day on the 10th and posted a flawless opening 9 to make the turn in 1-under 35 with the birdie coming on the par-3 14th. She posted a pair of birdies and bogeys on the other 9, including a closing three on the par-4 9th to secure UTA's first under-par round of the young season.
  • Ray matched Murray's total of three birdies as her undulating scorecard on the opening side featured a double bogey, pair of bogeys and back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th. After a pair of bogeys on holes 1 and 2, Ray rolled in a birdie on the short par-4 5th as she played the final seven holes in -1.
  • Gonzalez also rolled in three birdies on the day, two of which came consecutively on the par-4 7th and par-3 8th. However, a pair of doubles and a few other bogeys were too much to overcome.
  • After registering 31 pars through the first two rounds, Hlynsdottir carded 13 more on Sunday, including nine of the first 10 holes which she played in +1. Her lone birdie came on the 7th, but an unfortunate triple bogey on the 5th derailed an otherwise consistent round.
  • Tan was +5 through the first 10 holes, but settled down nicely and played the final eight holes in +1, including UTA's lone birdie of the day on the par-4, 317-yard 3rd.
THIS AND THAT
Hlynsdottir led the 96-player field with 44 pars over 54 holes … Murray tied for 8th in the field with 40 pars … for the second-straight day the field scoring average improved on the par-72, 6,002-yard layout: 73.50 final round, 74.13 2nd round and 75.02 1st round.

NEXT UP
UTA will take a three-week break from competitive action before returning to action Sept. 27-28 at Sam Houston's Bearkat Invitational.
