Men's Tennis Opens Season With Home Double Header

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's tennis team will begin their 2022 season this Friday with two matches at the UTA Tennis Center on the campus of UTA. The Mavericks will play Dallas Baptist at 10 am before following up with an afternoon match against Prairie View A&M at 2 pm.

The Mavericks are led by 2021 Sun Belt Conference Player to Watch Alan Sau Franco. A season ago, he won 12 matches, including 8 in the spring. He currently leads the Mavericks with a 7-4 record following a strong performance in tournament play during the fall.

Led by head coach Diego Benitez in his 17th season, the Mavericks are a veteran group with just one freshman amongst them.  The Mavericks return Daichi Akiyoshi, Ricardo Alban, Nick Beamish, Miguel Cabrera, Solano Caffarena, and Sau Franco. The lone freshman hails from Hamilton, New Zealand – Anton Shepp.

SCOUTING DBU
The Patriots are currently 0-3 this year, falling in dual matches from the fall at the Pueblo Duals. This will be their first match of the spring slate. A season ago they went 11-11. This will be the third match with DBU for the Mavericks, with UTA holding a 2-0 record against the Patriots.

SCOUTING PRAIRIE VIEW A&M
Entering the weekend, Prairie View A&M is 0-7 on the season and has not won a point in any of their matches. Last year the Panthers went 4-16. This will be the sixth match between these two programs with the Mavericks winning each previous match.

ON DECK
The Mavs stay in Arlington next weekend for another doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State (10 am) and Cameron (2 pm) on Friday, Feb. 4.
