NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The UT Arlington baseball team will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Nacogdoches to take on Stephen F. Austin. The series was originally scheduled for a three-game series, but will now be a double-header taking place on Sunday, Feb. 27 due to weather conditions.
UTA NOTES
- Three Mavericks have opened the season with a four-game hitting streak - David VanVooren, Cason Gregory and Oscar Ponce. VanVooren has also had a multi-hit game in three of those four games.
- Despite only making two starts this season, Jaden Brown is second on the team in RBI with four. He is also riding a three-game hitting streak.
- Seward County Community College products will be littering the field this weekend. Head Coach's Darin Thomas and John Cardenas both played at SCCC, while Maverick volunteer coach Galen McSpadden coached both of them.
- The Mavericks have come away with double-digit hits in each of their first four games and out-hit their opponent in three of the four games. The Mavericks didn't reach four games with multiple hits until the 27th game last season.
- UTA currently ranks in the top 50 in the NCAA in batting average (.329; 35th), sacrifice flies (3; 28th) and hits (46; 39th).
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | SFA
- The Lumberjacks are currently 1-3 on the season have lost three straight after winning the season opener over Northwestern State, 7-3. They are coming off an 11-1 loss at TCU on Tuesday.
- Cal Martin brings the power to the lineup for the Mavericks with two home runs already on the young season. He is currently 28th in the NCAA in home runs through the first week and a half of the season..
- Jake Zarrello, Gabe Irwin, Tod Gauthe and Martin are each batting over .300 on the year, with Zarrello (.444) and Irwin (.400) both at or above .400.
- Expect Joe Richter to see some action on the mound against the Mavericks. He allowed just one run last week in his start, tossing 6.0 innings against the Demons.
- As a whole, the Lumberjack pitching staff hoists a 5.73 ERA on the season and are allowing opposing teams to bat .278 against them.
SERIES HISTORY
UTA and SFA have played 67 previous times dating back to 1986 with the Mavericks winning 40 of those games. UTA has won three of the last five and seven of the last ten against the Lumberjacks, including winning last year's series 2-1 in Arlington.
