ARLINGTON - The UT Arlington baseball team (6-14, 0-3 SBC) will look to pick up their first Sun Belt Conference series win this weekend (March 25-27) when they host Troy (15-5, 3-0 SBC) at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA NOTES
- The long ball has been hard to come by this season for the Mavericks, so Steven Saunders had to come up with on in a non-traditional way. At Globe Life Field against DBU (March 22), he used a gracious bounce off the right-center wall to hit an inside-the-park home run, beating the throw home for his third home run of the season.
- With just two strikeouts on the season, junior infielder Tyler Rice has been the 11th hardest batter to strike out in the NCAA this season, doing so just once every 21 at-bats. That number is also the best in the Sun Belt Conference.
- Redshirt freshman Zach Henry has been impressive at the plate this season, leading the Mavericks in batting average (.340) and on-base percentage (.529), while ranking second on the team in slugging percentage (.500). His 16 walks on the year are more than double the next closest Maverick (Jaden Brown - 7).
- UTA has made pitchers and defenses work for outs this year. As a team, the Mavericks have an on-base percentage of .361 in the leadoff spot throughout the game.
- Junior Steven Saunders has made an impact when at the plate. He owns the highest slugging percentage on the team (.700), leading the team with eight extra-base hits (5 doubles, 2 home runs). He is also second on the team with 11 RBI.
- When given a lead, UTA has done a good job holding onto it. When leading after five innings, the Mavericks are 5-0 on the season. However, when trailing after five innings, UTA is just 1-13.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT | Troy
- The Trojans enter the weekend with a 15-5 record and have won nine straight dating back to March 6. They defeated Alabama State on Tuesday night 11-1 and swept Louisiana last weekend to open SBC play.
- Troy's pitching staff leads the Sun Belt Conference in strikeout to walk ratio (2.86) and in strikeouts per nine innings (10.4)
- Clay Stearns leads the league with 8 doubles on the season. He also has one home run on the year, leading the Trojans with nine extra base hits.
- Seven Trojans have double-digit RBI on the season. Jesse Hall and Clay Stearns lead the team with 15 on the year.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first regular season game between these conference foes in four years and the first time meeting in Arlington since 2017 when the Mavericks won the series 2-1. UTA is on a two-game win streak over the Trojans, including at the SBC Tournament a season ago in pool play.
