LUBBOCK, Texas – Day 1 of the Texas Tech Open & Multis started with the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon in which
Lucas Van Klaveren and
Jade Bontke were the only two Mavs to compete.
Both Mavs started their respective events with PRs, Bontke with a time of 8.70 in the 60m hurdles and Van Klaveren in the 60m dash with a time of 7.20. Bontke earned 974 points for her performance and started out in 10th place. Van Klaveren earned 813 points to start out in 13th place overall.
Bontke went on score 879 points in the high jump with a mark of 1.72m, 5-7.75 and a 3rd place finish to bring her total to 1853 points. In the shot put, she placed 13th with a throw of 10.89m, 35-8.75. On to the long jump where she set a mark of 5.72m, 18-4.50, to bring her point total to 3212 total points moving her into 8th place overall in the pentathlon. In the final event, the 800m, Bontke went on to place 3rd with a time of 2:19.82 to earn 826 points moving her point total to 4038, moving her into a 6th place finish. She nearly broke her school record of total points scored in a pentathlon.
Van Klaveren in the long jump set a mark of 7.02m, 23-0.50, to score 818 points and move his point total to 1631 and climbing the leader board to 10th place overall. In the shot put, he went on to finish 7th with a throw of 13.47m, 44-2.50, earning 696 points and maintaining his spot in 10th place overall. The final event of the day for the heptathlon was the high jump, in which Van Klaveren set a mark of 1.92m, 6-3.50, for a 12th place finish. He currently sits in 8th place overall with 3058 total points.

The men's heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the final 3 events, beginning with the 60m hurdles at 11:30 a.m. and followed by the pole vault and 1000m. After the conclusion of the heptathlon, the field events will start for the open portion of the meet at 3 p.m.
