Day 2 Of The Texas Tech Open & Multis Concludes

LUBBOCK, Texas – Day 2 of the Texas Tech Open & Multis started with the last 3 events of the men's heptathlon before moving on to the field events of the open followed shortly after with the running events.
 
Lucas Van Klaveren picked up where he left off yesterday in the men's heptathlon starting in the 60m hurdles finishing in 6th with a time of 8.16 for 942 points to move his point total to an even 4000. In the pole vault, Van Klaveren finished tied for 3rd with a mark of 5.00m, 16-4¾, a new PR good for 910 points. In the final event, the 1000m, he finished 5th with a time of 2:46.54 for 802 points. This moved his point total to 5712, falling 22 points short of his PR, and finishing 7th overall. With that finish, it also projected him into the top 10 in the standings in the nation.
 
In the 1st round of the men's 60m hurdles, Joel Bengtsson ran a 7.81, the 3rd fastest time in the 1st round, to move on to the finals. In the finals, Bengtsson did not disappoint finishing 2nd overall with a blistering 7.70 time being edged out narrowly by Darius Luff of Nebraska. The 7.70 time moves Bengtsson from the top 20 in the nation and in to the top 10 and broke his own school record of 7.78.
 
In the B section of the women's pole vault, Simona Cabella finished in a tie for the top spot. The sophomore finished with a mark of 3.88m, 12-8¾, a new indoor PR.
 
Among the other UTA top-10 finishers and/or personal bests set on Friday:
  • Randon Gray finished tied for 3rd in the B section of the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.94m, 16-2½. The junior just missed besting his PR of 4.95m.
  • Faith Shaw finished 5th in the B section of the women's long jump with a mark of 5.86m, 19-2¾. This is also a new PR for the freshman.
  • Mikeya Washington ran a 7.47 in the qualifying round of the women's 60m dash to advance to the 1st round, just missing her PR of 7.46. In the 1st round, she posted a time of 7.52, just missing the finals.
  • Adeyemi Talabi posted a time of 7.58 in the women's 60m dash, qualifying her to move on to the 1st round.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"Lucas and Joel had national caliber performances today, with Faith and Simona performing well in their respective events," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "Our women sprinters had a solid day, and we are improving overall as a team."
 
NEXT UP
The Texas Tech Open & Multis will conclude tomorrow, Jan. 27, with the field events picking back up starting at 10 a.m. and the running events beginning at 11:30 a.m. The meet will conclude around 5:00 p.m. and then it's all eyes set on the Howie Ryan Invitational hosted by Houston on Feb. 10.
