ARLINGTON – Looking to start the season 3-0, the UT Arlington men's basketball team begins a challenging road trip at New Mexico on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. CT inside The Pit.
Â
OPENING TIP(s)
- UTA will be looking for its first 3-0 start to a season since 2011-12. That year, the Mavericks went 24-9 overall and 15-1 in their last season as a Southland Conference member, winning the regular-season title and playing in the NIT.
Â
- A 3-0 start would also have KT Turner join Eddie McCarter as the only coaches in program history (10 total) to begin their tenure with UTA with three-straight wins. McCarter went 4-0 in his initial campaign in 1992-93. The first three victories were against non-Division I opponents, but his fourth triumph was a 95-87 double-overtime win over Gonzaga.
Â
- DaJuan Gordon was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after posting a pair of double-doubles in his UTA debut week, averaging 19 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. He is UTA's first conference Player of the Week recipient since David Azore claimed the honor on Feb. 15, 2022. Additionally, in now 2+ years in the WAC (2012-13, 2022-present), Gordon is the first Mav to garner a Player of the Week recognition as a member of the league. Â
- In terms of per-game average, UTA ranks 4th in the nation in 3-pointers made (13), 6th in rebounds (51.5) and 8th in offensive rebounds (18.5). Individually, Shemar Wilson is 2nd in the country with 6 offensive rebounds per contest and 12th with 12 boards overall. Gordon is 8th nationally with 12.5 rebounds and 5th in defensive rebounds (9.5).
TWEETABLES
1) UTA tied a single-game program record with 17 made 3-pointers on Saturday against UT Tyler. That mark had only been reached once previously – on Dec. 8, 2015, against Bradley.
2) The Mavs have already had six players reach double-figure points in a game this year (highs):
DaJuan Gordon (24),
Kade Douglas (18),
Akili Vining (14),
Brandyn Talbot (11),
Makaih Williams (11) and
Freds Pauls Bagatskis (11).
3) UTA had 26 assists on 34 made field goals versus UT Tyler. That was just the fourth time since 2010 that the Mavs had 26+ assists on 35 or fewer makes.
4) Talbot has made 17-straight free throws dating back to Nov. 12 of last season when he missed late in the 2nd half against Southwestern.
ABOUT NEW MEXICO
- New Mexico was receiving votes in the Associated Press Preseason Poll before falling at then-#23 Saint Mary's last Thursday, 72-58. The Lobos opened the year with a 92-55 win over Texas Southern on Nov. 6.
- The Lobos were picked to finish 3rd in the Mountain West Preseason Poll. New Mexico started last year 14-0, rose to a national ranking of #21 and finished with 22 wins and an NIT appearance. The Lobos lost in the NIT to fellow UTA WAC member Utah Valley, which reached the semifinals.
- This will be the fifth all-time meeting between UTA and New Mexico. In the first meeting on Nov. 23, 1990, the Lobos scored 136 points – the most UTA has ever allowed in a game (regulation or overtime). The next highest total is 135 in a triple-overtime contest against Lamar on Feb. 14, 1966, but the Mavs won that game, 138-135.
- Third-year New Mexico head coach Richard Pitino has faced UTA once before when he was at the helm of Minnesota – an 84-67 Gophers' win in Minneapolis on Nov. 14, 2016.
- New Mexico is ranked 48th by KenPom, and the Lobos have been led so far this year in scoring by Donovan Dent (13.5) and Jamal Mashburn Jr. (11). Nelly Joseph is nearly averaging a double-double with 9.5 points and 9 rebounds.
