Espinosa ranked 108th in ITA singles

ARLINGTON --- Men's tennis player Joan Torres Espinosa concluded the fall season ranked No. 108 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) men's singles rankings.

Espinosa, who is the only player in the Western Athletic Conference currently ranked in singles or doubles, is the first Maverick to appear in the rankings since Angel Diaz in 2021.

Espinosa finished his fall season with a 6-2 singles record. He had impressive performances at all three events, defeating opponents from top-ranked programs. At the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., he claimed the consolation bracket title, defeating St. John's Martin Bugaj 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

At the ITA Regional event in Fort Worth, Espinosa fought through three rounds of main draw matches before falling in the Round of 16 to TCU's Jack Pinnington (No. 3 seed). In his first-round match, he took out Baylor's Luc Koenig in a tight 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 match.

He followed up in the next round with an impressive performance over the No. 9 seed Cleeve Harper. The University of Texas Longhorn fell in straight sets, with Espinosa claiming the 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory. Harper is currently No. 82 in the rankings.

In his last event of the fall season, Espinosa finished strong, going undefeated at SMU's Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge. He earned three-set wins over Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Nico Trebuchet and Harvard's Valdemar Pape, as well as a strong 6-4, 6-3 victory over SMU's Callaway Clark.
