ARLINGTON – Doug Compton has joined the UT Arlington men's basketball team as an assistant coach, responsible for player development.
As part of Compton's player development duties, he – along with fellow assistant coach and operations and recruiting director
Cody San Miguel – are permitted to engage in coaching activities as part of the NCAA's additional two (2) coaches in 2023-24 who can participate in skill instruction, but may not recruit off campus.
Compton, who played at nearby Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth, most recently served as an assistant coach and video coordinator for the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G League during the 2022-23 season.
Other coaching stops in Compton's career include boys varsity assistant coach at The Pembroke Hill School in Missouri (2020-22), Blue Valley Northwest High School in Kansas (2019-20) and in Italy with the Fiat Torino Italian Basketball Club (2018-19) as a special assistant to Hall of Famer Larry Brown. Compton got his start in college basketball as a video coordinator for Southern Mississippi for the 2016-17 campaign.
"Doug and I have both worked with some of the same coaches, and I know he will make an impact on our player development day-in-and-day-out," said UTA head coach
KT Turner. "He works extremely hard and is dedicated to maximizing our roster's potential."
Beyond his coaching experience, Compton is a respected skill developer. In 2014, he founded 4theLove (4 the Love of the Game), and since then has coached and mentored five High School McDonald's All-Americans and more than 30 athletes who have earned a Division-I scholarship.
Compton also has led NBA pre-draft workouts for Excel Sports Management, working daily with numerous eventual NBA Draft lottery picks. In the past two NBA Drafts (2022 and 2023), Compton aided in daily pre-draft workouts with a dozen players who were eventually drafted, including 10 from the 2022 Class – two of whom were lottery picks (Johnny Davis and Ousmane Dieng).
As a student-athlete at Texas Wesleyan from 2014-16, Compton – a 2016 TWU graduate – was a starting guard and team captain, helping guide the Rams to a Sooner Athletic Conference Championship and a #3 national ranking at the NAIA level. He began his collegiate career at Kansas from 2010-12, serving as a practice player and volunteer student video coordinator under Hall of Famer Bill Self.
