Day Full Of PRs & Top 10 Finishes For Track & Field

HOUSTON, Texas – It was a day full of personal bests and top finishes for the UT Arlington's track and field teams.
 
Freshman Calen Jones finished 2nd overall in the men's high jump with a PR mark of 2.14m. This puts him at the top of the WAC leaderboards and ties him for 31st in the nation. This is also a top 5 mark in program history.
 
Senior Joel Bengtsson finished in 2nd place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.95, and finished the preliminary round with a time of 7.92. He still stands atop the WAC leaderboards and is tied for 17th in the nation.
 
Khalid Mendez matched his PR in the men's 60m preliminary round with a time of 6.91 to qualify for the finals. In the finals, Mendez went on to set a new PR with a time of 6.89 and a 5th place finish. He also finished 4th in the men's 200m with a time of 21.96.
 
4 Mavericks made the women's 60m finals, with freshman Diamond Mathis setting a PR with a time of 7.60. Mikeya Washington also finished with a time of 7.60. Faith Shaw finished with a time of 7.74 and Madison Pippins finished with a time of 7.85. All 4 of them sit in the top 20 of the WAC standings with Washington sitting in 3rd, Diamond Mathis moves into a tie for 4th with teammate Adeyemi Talabi, while Faith Shaw moves into 10th and Madison Pippins sits in 17th.
 
Malaiya Jedkins set a new indoor PR in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.52m and a 2nd place finish. She currently sits in 2nd overall in the WAC standings.

Marvin Walford tied his indoor PR in the men's triple jump of 14.77m for a 4th place finish and moves him into 5th in the WAC standings.
 
In the men's 3000m, the top 3 finishers were all Mavericks. Rogelio Aguirre set a new PR with a time of 8:27.70 and a 1st place finish. This also placed Aguirre in the top 20 of the WAC standings, landing at 18. Alfredo Corona finished in 2nd with a time of 8:30.49. Patrick Estes set a new PR with a time of 8:30.91 for a 3rd place finish.

Lucas Van Klaveren set a new indoor PR in the men's 400m with a time of 49.20 and a 7th place finish. He currently sits 16th overall in the WAC standings.

Tatyana Terrell had a pair of 2nd place finishes, in the women's 200m with a time of 24.40 and in the women's 400m with a time of 56.11.
 
Simona Cabella finished 2nd in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.75m, nearly besting her PR of 3.88m.
 
Isabel Borrego finished 2nd overall in the women's 3000m with a time of 10:25.90.
 
In the women's weight throw, Abigail Flores finished 3rd overall with a mark of 17.16m. She now sits in 8th place of the WAC leaderboards. 
 
Among the other UTA top-10 finishers and/or personal bests set on Friday:
  • McKinley Novacek finished 4th in the women's high jump, matching her PR mark of 1.65m.
  • Erlend Raa tied for 4th in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.04m, nearly besting his PR of 2.05m.
  • Josh Hoekendorf set a PR in the men's weight throw with a distance of 16.48m. He now sits in 9th in the WAC standings.
  • Racheal Hartley set a new PR in the women's 3000m with a time of 10:44.03, good for an 8th place finish.
  • Scarlett Johnson set 2 PRs today. First in the women's mile with a time of 5:26.29 and then in the 3000m with a time of 11:00.06 and a 10th place finish.
  • Lauren Walls-Portillo finished 6th in the women's 800m with a time of 2:19.39.
  • Tres Rodriguez set a new indoor PR in the men's shot put with a mark of 14.56m, moving him into 13th place in the WAC standings.
  • Shelby West qualified for the finals in the women's 60m hurdles, finishing 6th overall in the finals with a time of 9.07.
  • Brady Shadrick posted a new PR in the men's shot put with a mark of 12.56.
  • Krianne McBride finished 9th in the women's 800m with a time of 2:19.62.
  • Jackson Cichon finished 5th in the men's 800m with a time of 1:54.57.
  • In the men's 200m: Davontay Kennedy finished 5th with a time of 22.02, Robert Griffin finished 7th with a time of 22.12 and Jarvis Miles finished 9th with a time of 22.40.

The regular season for indoor is over as UTA prepares for the WAC Indoor Championships starting on February 24 and lasting through the 26 in Spokane, Washington.
