Baseball Ready For First Home Series Of The 2023 Campaign

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team has their first home stand of the 2023 season this weekend as they welcome McNeese State to Clay Gould Ballpark (February 24-26).
 
First pitch for game one of the series on Friday is slated for a 6:30 pm start. The Saturday game of the series is scheduled for a 2 pm start with the series finale on Sunday at 1 pm.
 
Your Mavericks currently sit at 1-4 on the young season with McNeese coming in at 1-3 on the year so far. UTA currently leads the all-time series 65-64, 32-22 at home. The last series was played in 2021, with UTA taking 2 out of 3 of those games. In their last 10 meetings, they are tied at 5 wins and 5 losses apiece. 
 
Offensively, UTA has 4 players batting over .300 so far this season, led by Matt Cavanagh who is hitting .471 on 8 hits in 17 plate appearances. Steven Saunders (.389), Tyson Pointer (.368) and Ryan Black (.308) rounds out the top for for the Mavs. Freshman Ben Lumsden leads the club with 4 runs driven in with 1 homerun and 1 triple. As a team, UTA is currently hitting .250.
 
Caden Noah leads the pitching staff with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.20 whip. He is 1-0 on the mound, picking up the victory is his only start of the season, going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. Connery Peters has the only save on the year for the Mavs, pitching 4 innings in relief for it to post a 2.25 ERA and .75 whip to go along with 5 strikeouts.

  • Payton Harden became the Cowboys' all-time leader in hits and runs scored earlier this week in the Cowboys' game against Sam Houston. He will enter the weekend with 256 career hits and 165 career runs scored.
  • Brad Burckel is leading McNeese with a .400 batting average and hitting safely in 25 straight games, dating back to last season.
  • Friday night starting pitcher Grant Rogers is the reigning SLC Pitcher of the Week. He threw 6 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 8 in his only start of the season.
  • Head coach Justin Hill is in his 10th season as the Cowboys' skipper and is the winningest coach in school history with 267 victories.
