Baseball Welcomes Tarleton To Arlington For Midweek Clash

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (8-12, 3-3 WAC) is set to host Tarleton (14-6, 1-2 WAC) for a midweek clash on Tuesday, March 21, at Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
 
This is the fourth matchup of the year between the Mavericks and Texans and will be a non-conference contest between the two. The first three meetings were both teams first WAC series, with UTA taking two out of three games.
 
UTA NOTES
  • Coming off their second conference series of the season and first conference home series, hosting Abilene Christian. Won the first game of the series and dropped the last two games.
  • In game two of the ACU series, the Mavericks hit three homeruns as a team, the first time UTA has hit three total homeruns in a single game since April 21, 2021, against Kansas at Clay Gould Ballpark.
  • In the most recent NCAA RPI rankings, the Mavericks jumped up 23 spots going to 55 from 78. This is the highest ranking for a WAC team, with Grand Canyon the second highest, coming in at 68. This is current as of March 19, 2023.
  • As a team, the Mavericks are tied for 32nd in the NCAA in doubles with 44 for the year. Tyson Pointer leads the charge with 10 and is tied for 6th in the nation.
  • In the NCAA, UTA is tied for 22nd in doubles per game coming in with 2.20. Tyson Pointer leads the way with 0.50 per game which has him tied for 23rd nationally.
  • As a team, UTA is tied for 87th in the NCAA in total hits with 188 in 685 total at-bats.
  • In the NCAA, the Mavericks are tied for 77th in sacrifice bunts with eight on the year. Cason Gregory leads the way with five for the season which has him tied for 14th in the nation.
  • Connery Peters is tied for 1st in the NCAA in saves, with six on the year.
  • Ryan Black leads the Mavs offensively, batting .368 on the year while slugging .566 for the season. Leads the team with 28 hits and tied for second with 16 runs driven in and three homeruns.
  • Tyson Pointer leads UTA with 18 RBIs and 10 doubles for the season. Also is tied for second on the team with 25 hits and three homeruns. Is slugging .554 for the season.
  • Garrison Berkley is hitting .316 on the year with 25 hits, five coming via doubles, and driving in 14 runs on the year. 
  • Ben Lumsden leads the Mavericks with four homeruns on the season. He is hitting .250 for the year with 19 hits, three doubles, two triples and driving in 16 runs.
 
TARLETON NOTES
  • Coming off a week in which the Texans went 3-1, sweeping the University of the Incarnate Word to end the week.
  • Two Texans currently are hitting over .400. Trace Morrison leads the way with a .422 average, collecting 19 hits in 45 at-bats. Mason Hammond is hitting .408 on the season, with a team high 31 hits in 76 at-bats.
  • As a team, the Texans are hitting .320 on the year with 217 hits in 679 at-bats.
  • Tarleton comes into the game with a 4.68 team ERA.
 
NEXT UP
After the midweek matchup with Tarleton, the Mavericks travel to Houston for a four-game weekend with two games against the Northwestern Wildcats and the Houston Cougars. The weekend begins on Friday, March 24, with a doubleheader starting with Northwestern at 1:30 p.m. and rounding out the day with Houston at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m. the Mavericks will battle Northwestern. To conclude the weekend on Sunday, March 26, UTA will take on Houston starting at 1 p.m.
