Baseball Travels To Houston For Four-Game Set

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (9-12, 3-3 WAC) heads to Houston for a jam-packed weekend with a four-game slate. The Mavericks will play two games against the Northwestern Wildcats and two games against the Houston Cougars.
 
Friday, March 24, will be the only scheduled double header on the season for UTA with the first game coming against Northwestern and the second game against Houston. The games were originally schedules for a 1:30 p.m. start time (Northwestern) and a 6:30 p.m. start time (Houston) but due to projected inclement weather, the game times have been bumped up with the Northwestern game starting at 11 a.m. and the Houston game at 3 p.m.
 
Saturday, March 25, the Mavericks are set to battle Northwestern with first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m. To wrap up the weekend on Sunday, March 26, UTA takes on Houston with a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.
 
UTA NOTES
  • In the most recent NCAA RPI rankings, the Mavericks sit at 55. This is the highest ranking for a WAC team, with Grand Canyon the second highest, coming in at 65. This is a higher RPI then Texas, last year's national runner-up in Oklahoma, and reigning national champion Ole Miss.
  • Connery Peters is tied for second in the NCAA and first in the WAC in saves, with six on the year.
  • As a team, UTA is tied for 94th in the NCAA in total hits with 196 in 713 total at-bats. Ryan Black is tied for 92nd with 30 base hits in 79 plate appearances.
  • The Mavericks are tied for 42nd in the NCAA in doubles with 45 for the year. Tyson Pointer leads the charge with 10 and is tied for 11th in the nation.
  • UTA is tied for 64th in doubles per game coming in with 2.14. Tyson Pointer leads the way with 0.48 per game which has him tied for 31st nationally.
  • In the NCAA, the Mavericks are tied for 87th in sacrifice bunts with eight on the year. Cason Gregory leads the way with five for the season which has him tied for 14th in the nation.
  • Hold a .276 batting average, a .414 slugging percentage, a .793 OPS and a .379 on base percentage as a team for the season.
  • As a pitching staff, the Mavericks have a 6.87 earned run average and striking out 153 batters in 180.2 innings pitched.
  • Hold a 4-1 record over Northwestern with the last time the two teams met was back in 2007, a game in which the Mavericks won 20-2 in Arlington.
  • Houston leads the series 3-10, with the last meeting coming in 2021 where they met four time and splitting those games 2-2.
 
NORTHWESTERN NOTES
  • Come into the weekend with a 1-14 record. Have not played a home game yet this season.
  • Carry a .232 team batting average with a .333 slugging percentage.
  • In 122 innings pitched, the Wildcats come in with a 10.77 team earned run average.
  • Through 15 games, offensively Northwestern is led by Stephen Hrustich with a .292 batting average on 14 hits in 48 at-bats, two doubles, one triple, one homerun and nine runs driven in as well as swiping three bases.
  • Matt McClure carrying a 1-3 record on the mound, posting 7.56 ERA through 25 innings pitched. Has 21 strikeouts compared to 10 walks for the year.
 
HOUSTON NOTES
  • Enter the weekend with a 10-11 record with a 4-6 record at home. Currently riding a five-game winning streak.
  • Hitting .258 as a team with a .391 slugging percentage and a .736 OPS.
  • Have hit 15 homeruns as a unit.
  • Pitching staff is holding a 6.09 earned run average with 189 punch outs for the season.
  • Alex Lopez leads the Cougars offensively with a .362 batting average, collecting 25 hits in 69 at-bats. Driven in 11 runs with four doubles and one homerun as well as scoring 12 runs. Struck out seven times compared to 14 walks and holding a .471 on base percentage.
