ARLINGTON – Following a weekend in which UT Arlington swept the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's tennis regular-season championships, the Mavericks nearly swept the WAC weekly awards, as announced by league officials on Friday afternoon.
Liz Chileno was named the WAC Singles Player of the Week, while Chileno and partner Sarina Reinertsen were tabbed as the conference's Doubles Players of the Week. On the men's side, Santiago Giamichelle and Dante Teramo claimed the Doubles Players of the Week, leaving the Men's Singles Player of the Week as the only one of four WAC awards not won by UTA in the final installment of league's weekly honors this season.
A native of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, Chileno won three-consecutive matches in straight sets to finish off the regular season with triumphs over North Texas (4-1), Sam Houston (7-0) and Stephen F. Austin (7-0). In her most recent match, the senior took down SFA's Alkmini Giannakogiorgou, 7-5, 6-3, as part of UTA's Senior Day on Sunday to help secure the Mavs' third-straight conference regular-season title (first in the WAC). UTA's primary No. 1 player, Chileno went 12-6 overall this spring.
Chileno and Reinertsen, a sophomore from Oslo, Norway, defeated Sam Houston's Vianne Schwab and Linn Svaerd, 6-1, on Friday. Two days later, they found themselves down 4-1 to the Lumberjacks' pair of Felicia Back and Zala Ule before storming back to register five points in a row and secure a 6-4 win. Those two for UTA have contributed heavily to the Mavs' doubles success this season, going 13-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in WAC matches on Court 2.
As for the men, freshmen GIamichelle and Teramo picked up a big 7-6 (1) victory over the Seattle U grouping of Michael Frank and Julian Worn on Sunday to earn UTA the doubles point. With the first two courts split, the duo won the tiebreaker to set the tone for a 6-1 Mavs' win which notched a perfect 5-0 conference record for the team and its first regular-season crown since 2010.
GIamichelle, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Teramo, who hails from Rio Cuarto, Argentina, hold an 11-5 overall record and 4-1 in WAC matches.
Both the UTA men and women earned No. 1 seeds in the upcoming WAC Tennis Championships, which are set to get underway for the women on Thursday, Apr. 27, and for the men on Friday, Apr. 28. All matches will be held at the Arlington Tennis Center (500 W. Mayfield Rd.), and admission is free.
