Softball Eliminated From WAC Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Despite a comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh, the UT Arlington softball team's 2023 season ended as the Mavericks fell to #1 seeded Utah Tech Thursday night at GCU Softball Stadium with a final score of 6-4.
 
UTA went 1-2 in its time at the Western Athletic Conference Championship as head coach Kara Dill and the Maverick squad finished with an overall record of 22-30.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: vs #1 Utah Tech (L, 6-4)
Reagan Hukill (3-4, 1 RBI). Marley Neises (1-5, 1 RBI), Meagan Smith (3-3, 1 RBI), Kimber Cortemelia (2-4) and Zaia Castruita (2-4, 1 RBI) all came away with multi-hit efforts. Hukill's performance proved to be her ninth multi-hit game of the season as Smith collected her fifth.
 
Fifth year Sophie Wideman also contributed to the Mavericks' 13-hit total going 1-4 at the plate with a double back in the fourth inning.
 
UTA relied solely off the arm of sophomore Jessica Adams as she tallied her 12th complete game, coming away with five strike outs across 33 batters faced. With UTA unable to fight back, Adams was handed the loss.

PLAY BY PLAY: vs #1 Utah Tech (L, 6-4)
  • Utah Tech scored early with one in the top of the first off an RBI-single up the middle.
  • With runners on first and third in the second inning, the Trailblazers extended their lead to 2-0 with a double steal.
  • An RBI-double in the left center gap plated Utah Tech's third run of the as they were up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
  • UTA scored its first run of the game in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI-double from Castruita that brought around pinch-runner Ashleigh Sgambelluri.
  • Rachel Campbell went on to tab a two-run home run in the fifth to center field that made it a 5-1 ball game.
  • Hukill logged a double off the center field ball before Neises knocked Hukill in with a double of her own, which cut the deficit down to three.
  • Smith put up her third hit of the night as she brought around Neises from second to plate UTA's third run.
  • The Trailblazers put up a solo shot to left field that extended their lead to 6-3.
