Former Iona, JUCO Product Dwayne Koroma Signs With UTA

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's basketball team has added another Division-I transfer as former Iona and most recently Salt Lake Community College product Dwayne Koroma has signed with the Mavericks.

The 6-8 forward spent his redshirt freshman season with Salt Lake CC this past year, averaging 9 points, 5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals over 28 games in which he made 15 starts. Those numbers were highlighted by Koroma shooting a gaudy 70.1 percent (94-134) from the floor, which was the 5th-highest percentage nationally.

Additionally, he was the only player in the country last year to connect at a 70-percent rate from the floor and the free throw line (72.1). The last time a JUCO player at any level (Division I, II or III) shot 70+ percent from both the field and charity stripe for a season was 2019-20.

Koroma helped lead the Bruins to the NJCAA Tournament Second Round and a 29-5 record one year after finishing as the national runner-up.

The Berlin, Germany, native redshirted with the Bruins in 2021-22 after his freshman year at Iona during the COVID-impacted 2020-21 campaign. Playing for Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, Koroma appeared in all 18 games for Iona and averaged 2.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

Koroma made 12 starts – 10 of which came consecutively to end the year, including the MAAC Championship and Iona's NCAA Tournament contest against Alabama. The Gaels went nearly two months during the regular season – from late December until mid February – without playing a game due to COVID.

"Dwayne adds conference championship and NCAA Tournament experience to our roster," stated UTA head coach KT Turner. "He is athletic, finishes really well around the rim and can play and defend multiple positions. Dwyane possesses a winning mentality and has a bright future."

The 205-pound Koroma reached double-figure points 12 times and had four double-doubles last year with Salt Lake CC. He delivered a season-high 18 points against Casper College on Nov. 4, pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds on three occasions and issued a season-most eight assists on Jan. 6 at Community Christian College.

With Iona in 2020-21, Koroma notched a pair of 10-point games, including in the MAAC Tournament versus Quinnipiac. He secured a season-high seven rebounds in his first collegiate start at Hofstra on Dec. 5, and passed out three assists three times during the year.

Following Iona's aforementioned eight weeks in-between games, Koroma was inserted into the starting lineup and he remained there the rest of the season; half of those 10 games from Feb. 12-Mar. 20 were postseason contests either in the MAAC or NCAA tournaments.

Koroma began his playing career in his native Germany, and played his club ball for the Berlin Tigers before attending Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Md., for his high school senior season in 2019-20.

This is Turner's fifth signee of his initial recruiting class as Koroma joins Division-I transfers Phillip Russell, DaJuan Gordon and Freds Pauls Bagatskis, and high school product Makaih Williams.
