UTA Adds Clemson, Tulsa Transfer Chauncey Gibson

ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington men's basketball team has officially added a mid-year transfer in former Clemson and Tulsa product Chauncey Gibson.

A 3-start recruit coming out of Dallas Kimball High School in 2022, Gibson is a redshirt freshman with three years of eligibility remaining, and potentially four years pending waivers. As of now, Gibson is expected to make his UTA debut at the start of the 2024-25 season.

Despite court and NCAA rulings in December granting immediate eligibility to multi-time transfers, Gibson is not currently able to compete due to an NCAA bylaw which prohibits instant eligibility for mid-year transfers, unless a waiver is submitted and approved.

The 6-5, 190-pound combo guard averaged 17.6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game as a senior at Kimball as part of 1,743 career high school points. He was ranked as the No. 23 player in Texas and originally chose Clemson over Texas Tech, SMU and Old Dominion.

After not playing and utilizing a redshirt year in 2022-23 at Clemson, Gibson transferred to Tulsa last spring. The consensus top-110 recruit in the Class of 2022 did not suit up for the Golden Hurricane this fall, and joined UTA earlier this month for the spring semester.

"We're excited to have another local DFW product on our roster," said UTA head coach KT Turner. "I originally recruited Chauncey in high school, so I've been following him for a while. He's a skilled, long talent who can play multiple positions, shoots the ball well and is a high-IQ player."

While Gibson is not currently competing in games for the Mavs, he is able to participate in practices – a similar scenario to Phillip Russell during the fall before he received eligibility in mid-December.

Russell and the Mavs return to action later this week when they embark on a three-game road trip, beginning Thursday at Southern Utah. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT (6:30 MT) from Cedar City.
