HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team will head down I-45 for a midweek clash against Sam Houston State at Don Sanders Stadium Wednesday, Feb. 28, scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start time.
QUICK FACTS
- This will be the Mavericks only appearance against their former WAC foes this season. Last season, when SHSU was in the WAC, the Mavs and Bearkats faced off in a 3-game series which resulted in a sweep for SHSU.
- Throughout 8 games, UTA has a 3-0 record when hitting a homerun and have a 2-0 record on the early season when leading after 4 innings.
- Ryan Ellis has the highest batting average on the team, slashing an astonishing .407. He also has recorded a hit in all 8 games thus far, the only Maverick to do so on the year. His 11 hits on the year also rank first on the team.
- Ryan Black has built off his outstanding freshman campaign a season ago and has continued his offensive dominance so far this year with 10 hits already (2nd on the team), and 3 RBIs to go along. He leads the team in slugging percentage with a respectable .600 rate, and OPS with a staggering 1.092 mark.
- After hitting just one double throughout the first three games of the season, UTA has recorded at least two doubles per game in their last five games, cracking a total of thirteen over that span.
- JD Moreno came alive in the series against Boston College this past weekend, slashing three hits in six at bats (.500) as a designated hitter. The Grand Prairie, Texas native also recorded three runs throughout the series, and cracked an RBI double which resulted in 2 runs being plated during the Mavs loss on Sunday, Feb. 25.
OPPONENT HISTORY
This will be the 106th meeting between UTA and Sam Houston State, with the Mavs trailing the all-time series 49-56. The last Maverick victory against the Bearkats came on Apr. 11, 2018, by a margin of just one run, 4-3. The last UTA win in Hunstville against SHSU came on Mar. 13, 2011, with a 4-2 victory.

After the midweek bout, in a quick turnaround, the Mavs will head to Beaumont, Texas for a weekend series against Lamar University, Mar. 1-3.
