Mavericks Go 1-1 In Cajun Tennis Classic

LAFAYETTE, La.-- The UT Arlington men's tennis team (3-2) went 1-1 in the Cajun Tennis Classic on Friday at the Cajun Tennis Courts. They fell 4-3 to North Alabama in their first match then defeated Tyler Junior College 4-0 in their second match. All of Saturday's matches were canceled.
 
The Mavericks' first match against the Lions came down to the wire, with the Mavs only one point short of victory. The Lions earned the early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point.
 
Andres Medus and Yazid Lahjomri fell 6-2 to Nazar Fedoryshyn and Federico Scotuzzi on Court 2. Pedro Sasso and Meethre Barot lost by a break to Lachlan Brain and Izan Orgiles on Court 3, 6-4.
 
The Mavs battled back in singles action but could not overcome the Lions.
 
On Court 1, Dante Teramo dropped the first set to Brain 6-1. He could not close out the second set, falling 6-4 for the match. Solano Caffarena evened the singles score with a win on Court 2, defeating Alberto Altur in a dominant 6-2, 6-1 performance.
 
Joan Torres Espinosa earned another win for the Mavericks, dropping only two games on Court 3. He defeated Orgiles 6-1, 6-1 to earn his first singles win for the spring.
 
Newcomer Barot fell in a close three sets on Court 4 to Fedoryshyn. After losing by a break in the first set, Barot battled back to take the second set by the same score, 6-4. Barot could not overcome Fedoryshyn in the deciding set, falling 6-3.
 
Sasso earned his second singles win of the spring season on Court 5 over Scotuzzi in straight sets. After Sasso took the first set 6-3, Scotuzzi fought back to bring the second to a tiebreaker. Only dropping four points in the tiebreaker, Sasso finished victorious, 7-6 (4).
 
Medus also fell in three sets on Court 6 in a close match with Birtan Duran. Medus played a dominant first set, dropping only one game for the 6-1 win. Duran fought back to take the second set, winning by a break 6-4. Medus could not overcome Duran in the third, dropping the set 6-2.
 
In their second match against TJC, the Mavericks swept the Apaches 4-0 to enter back into the win column.
 
Doubles came down to the final court, with the Mavs battling to gain the early advantage.
 
Sasso and Barot fell by a break on Court 2 to give the Apaches the first doubles win, with Doni Gashi and Dan Persson taking the set 6-4. Caffarena and Medus took the next match to even the score on Court 3 over Matthew Browning and Naithaolin Gomei 6-4.
 
The doubles point came down to Court 1, where Teramo and Espinosa took the final victory to clinch the 1-0 lead. The pair improved to 5-2 on the 2023-24 season with the 6-4 win over Alex Despoja and Juan Carlos Garcia.
 
The Mavericks carried the doubles momentum into singles play, earning the next three wins to secure the sweep.
 
Court 4 was the first off, with Barot dropping only one game to Golmei. After a dominant 6-0 first set, Barot continued his success in the second, earning a 6-1 win.
 
Medus followed up with another straight set victory on Court 5 to put the Mavericks one point away from victory. He defeated Gashi 6-2, 6-2 to earn his second win of the spring season.
 
Teramo clinched the victory on Court 3 over Persson in two tight sets. Teramo earned the first set victory by a break, going up 6-4. The second set stayed close and eventually came down to a tiebreaker at 6-6. Teramo closed out the victory by two points, 7-6 (5).
 
Since the match had been decided, Courts 1, 3 and 6 did not finish their matches. Espinosa was tied in the third set after taking the second 6-0, Sasso was up one game in the third set and Lahjomri had split sets after dropping the second in a tiebreaker.
 
The second day of matches at the Cajun Tennis Classic was canceled, and the Mavericks ended the tournament with a 1-1 record.
 
The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday at the UTA Tennis Center to take on Rice at 2 p.m.
