Mavs Facing Off Against Houston In Non-Conference Weekend Series

HOUSTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team will face off against the Houston Cougars in a non-conference weekend series from Apr. 26-28, at the Don Sanders Field at the Darryl and Lory Schroeder Park..

  • The Mavericks currently sit in 5th place in the WAC standings with a conference record of 12-9. 
  • Tyson Pointer currently leads the team with 50 total hits throughout the season. The Dallas native has also tallied the most at bats on the squad with 164 at bats and recorded a team-leading 3 stolen bases on the season, nabbing a base in all three of his attempts. Pointer, during the last conference series against Utah Valley last a week ago, he mashed 2 homeruns and recorded 4 RBIs.
  • The Mavericks boast the 2nd best walks allowed per nine innings in the NCAA with a mark of 2.85. Caylon Dygert leads the way on the team with a 1.19 mark on the season, walking just 9 batters in 68.1 innings pitched and ranks 7th in the entire NCAA. Zach Norris, a native of Paris, Texas, ranks 32nd in the NCAA in walks allowed per nine innings with a rate of 1.65 walks allowed per nine innings. Additionally, Norris currently ranks 37th in the NCAA in strikeout-to-walk ratio with a mark of 5.20.
  • Ryan Black, the sophomore out of Grand Prairie, Texas, ranks T-25th in the NCAA with 16 doubles on the season. Black also has 2 triples on the season which not only leads the team, but also ranks 2nd in the conference.
  • Ryan Ellis, who has drawn a team-leading 28 walks, ranks 2nd in the conference in reaching a base on balls. During the game on Friday, Apr. 19, against Utah Valley, Ellis tied the program's single-game hitting record by racking in 5 hits in the win. The Arizona native went 5-for-5 with 3 doubles with an RBI. He also leads the team in batting average with a mark of .324.
  • Parker Airhart leads the team in homeruns with 9 longballs on the season and has also brought in the most RBIs on the team with 33. The Sugar Land, Texas native has also tallied the most total bases on the squad with 80 throughout the season.
 
OPPONENT HISTORY
This will be the 16th, 17th and 18th all-time matchup between the Cougars and the Mavericks dating all the way back to 1989.
 
The Mavericks hold an all-time record of 4-11 against the Cougars. The last win for UTA came last year in a 15-2 win in extra innings on Mar. 24, 2023. In that game, the Mavericks set a program record for home runs in a game with 8 moonballs in the game.
 
ON DECK
The Mavs will head to Waco, Texas for the final game of its long 8-game road stretch against the Baylor Bears on Tuesday, April 30 at 6 p.m.
