STANFORD, California – UT Arlington men's basketball (7-4) dropped its non-conference game at Stanford (9-2) 76-60 on Wednesday night on the road in Northern California. Sophomore guard
Cash Chavis led the way for the Mavs with 14 points, four assists and a pair of steals, while senior guard
Marcell McCreary posted 12 points, five boards and two steals.
"They (Stanford) had a good game plan," head coach
KT Turner said following the game. "They were very, very physical. It was hard for us to master physicality in the front line. And then we didn't make shots. They hurt us when they went to a zone. But the biggest thing is we didn't bring our energy and our physicality. That really hurt us. I told the team (afterward) that we've got to stay together, then we get ready for Monday against Oral Roberts. Tonight we were playing an ACC team – we were a little overmatched, even though they had a couple guys out. We learned a lot from them."
Stanford opened the game on a 14-4 run, and the Mavs never could fully overcome a physical Cardinal team, ultimately getting as close as 26-19 courtesy of a 7-0 run, but falling behind by 15 at the break.
In addition to Chavis and McCreary's double figure performance, the Mavs got nine points and five rebounds off the bench from true freshman forward/center
Amari Reed.
The Mavs made one more run at the Cardinal, trimming a 17-point deficit to 10 at 49-39 at the 12:03 mark in the second half, which was capped off with a three-point play by McCreary. They could however, get no closer, as Stanford was able to pull away for the 16-point win to improve to 9-2 on the season, picking up their fifth win in their last six.
The Mavericks shot just 41.9% from the field and were 4-of-14 from distance (28.6%). The Cardinal did a lot of damage on the interior, outscoring the Mavs 36-24 in the paint.
UTA remains on the road and travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to take on Oral Roberts (5-8) on Monday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on the Summit League Network, and fans can listen live on the Varsity Network App with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours on the call.
