Lafayette, La. – The UT Arlington men's tennis team (2-4) picked up their first two victories of the 2025 spring campaign on Friday afternoon after defeating Tyler Junior College 4-0 in their first match and Southern Arkansas 4-0 in their second match at the Cajun Tennis Courts.
The Mavs dominated the day through strong showings in doubles and singles play, with a pair of duos picking up two wins in doubles action while two Mavs saw two victories in singles action on the day.
The Mavericks secured the singles point in match one against the Apache after the team of
Mattia Ricci and
Andres Medus defeated Alexander Morris and Mauricio Marincas 6-1 on Court 3 followed by the duo of
Meethre Barot and
Pedro Sasso defeating Alex Despoja and Daniel Jankoski 6-4 on Court 1, clinching the point.
Singles play started off with a bang as
Yazid Lahjomri defeated Jacopo Cianfarini swiftly, 6-0, 6-0 on Court 6. Ricci flew through the first set on Court 4, winning 6-0 over Doni Gashi. Ricci then clinched the third point for the Mavs after winning 6-4 in set two. Medus clinched the match in a three-set thriller, defeating Jankoski 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 on Court 2.
In match two of the day against the Muleriders, the Mavs continued their strong doubles play, capturing the doubles point after a win on Court 2 and the clincher on Court 1 after dropping Court 3 to start out.
The duo of Barot and Sasso picked up their second doubles victory of the day, clinching the doubles point on Court 1 in the process by defeating Tim Fischer and Mathys Pinoit 6-4. The team of Medus and Ricci also picked up their second doubles victory of the day after defeating Lluc Pasqual and Jinsei Tajima 6-3 on Court 2.
In singles action, Medus was bumped up to Court 1 where he defeated Pinoit 6-3, 6-4 to put the Mavs up 2-0. It was Medus' second singles victory of the day, going undefeated on the afternoon in singles and doubles action.
Lahjomri picked up his second singles victory of the day after defeating Diehl Uwe 6-3, 6-4 on Court 6 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Mavs.
Federico Garbero clinched the 4-0 sweep for the Mavs on Court 4, defeating Pasqual 6-4, 6-3.
The Mavs will wrap up the weekend with one match Saturday, Feb. 8, morning when they take on the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana at 9 a.m. to wrap up the Cajun Winter Classic. You can follow along with live results by clicking
