FORT WORTH, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team competed in the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament, entering the Fort Worth regional as the No. 4 seed. The Mavericks replaced Tulsa, who had to withdraw from the tournament due to inclement weather.
UTA (0-3) lost both matches, suffering a 4-0 sweep at the hands of region host and ITA No. 5 ranked TCU (3-1) before dropping its consolation match by a score of 4-1 against region No. 3 seed Boise State (1-2).
In doubles play against the Horned Frogs, the duo of Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Duncan Chan — the No. 23 ranked doubles team in the country — scored a quick 6-1 victory for TCU on Court 2. UTA's pairings on both Court 1 and Court 3 put up a strong fight, but Cooper Woestendick and Oliver Bonding prevailed over
Axel Delva and
Yazid Lahjomri on Court 1 to secure a point for TCU.
In singles matches, Maximus Dussault — ranked No. 114 — secured another point for the Horned Frogs with a win over Delva on Court 5. Woestendick then secured his second victory of the match, taking down Saul Berdullas on Court 2. The match ended when No. 47 ranked Julian Alonso knocked off
Ellison Minnaar in straight sets to pick up the decisive point on Court 4.
Among the matches left unfinished, Lahjomri was deadlocked with Chan — ranked No. 6 — on Court 1 at four games apiece in the second set.
UTA took on Boise State shortly after in the consolation match. The Broncos were swept by No. 2 seed Georgia (2-0) earlier in the day. TCU and Georgia are set to meet in the regional championship round.
Despite the loss, the Mavericks did pick up their first point of the spring.
Novak Ivanovic defeated Idriss Haddouch 6-2, 6-3 on Court 1 in singles competition to get UTA on the board.
The Mavericks had several close calls in singles action.
Finbar McGarvey won a lengthy tiebreaker 7-6 (11-9) in the first set of his Court 3 match against Stewart Aronson, but the match was left unfinished before the completion of the second set.
Berdullas battled Avery Tallakson in two close sets on Court 2, but Tallakson ultimately picked up the match-deciding point after winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Minnaar and Delva also fell in their singles matches, and the Mavericks lost both completed doubles matches.
UTA has the weekend off before a road trip to face a Big 12 opponent in Oklahoma State. The match is slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
