Abdelkader Advances to Round of 16 on Day 1 of ITA Texas Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman Seifeldeen Abdelkader put together a standout opening day for the UT Arlington men's tennis team Thursday, winning both of his matches at the ITA Men's Texas Regional Championship at Texas Christian University.
Playing as the No. 14 seed in his first collegiate regional, Abdelkader opened the 10:30 a.m. session with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lamar's Stefano Chappuis. He controlled the match from the first game and closed it out in straight sets.
In the second round, Abdelkader met UT Rio Grande Valley's Loic Young at 1:30 p.m. and won 6-1, 7-5. He took the first set with ease, then held his composure in a tighter second to advance to the round of 16.
Senior Leon Grassnickel also advanced, rallying from a 4-6 first-set loss to beat UTRGV's Eoghan Samyn, 6-2, 6-1. Grassnickel ended his run in the Round of 32 with a 1-6, 3-6 loss to Demitri Goubin of UTSA.
Novak Ivanovic pushed Incarnate Word's Santiago Flyckt to a deciding set before falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7). Bautista Durrel Rojas and Christopher Bennett Wirahadipoernomo each dropped their matches.
NEXT UP
Day 2 of the ITA Men's Texas Regional begins Friday morning. After the ITA Texas Regional, the Mavs are back in action at the Rice Invite on Oct. 16.
