The Mavericks jumped on the Horned Frogs early with a nine-run first inning and held on late behind key relief work from
Merek Sears and closer
Zach Evans.
UTA went to the plate 13 times in the opening frame, recording seven hits and capitalizing on two TCU errors to build a 9-0 lead.
Harold Laracuente finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI at the top of the lineup, while
Preston Knott went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs.
Xavier Melendez added two hits and two RBI, and
Xander McAfee delivered a two-run single as part of the first-inning surge that forced TCU starter Nolan Johnson out after just 25 pitches.
TCU chipped away with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth, eventually cutting into the lead with an eighth run in the ninth. UTA answered with two insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by an RBI walk and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, to maintain separation. The Mavericks totaled 11 hits and went 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position in the win.
PITCHING PROFILE
Jacob Havern got the start and worked the first two innings before
Jack Barr bridged the middle frames. Sears earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits while stabilizing the game as TCU mounted its comeback.
Hayes Melville followed with two innings and two strikeouts, and true freshman
Zach Evans closed the door in the ninth, recording the final two outs to secure his first save of the season and his collegiate career. The Mavericks limited TCU to 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners.
