ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington fell to Dallas Baptist, 6–1, Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark, as a three-run first inning and a three-run eighth proved decisive in a steady midweek contest.
DBU struck early with three runs on three hits in the opening frame, capitalizing on two walks and a Maverick error to take control. UTA finished with eight hits and drew six walks, but stranded 12 runners and went
0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, limiting its ability to close the gap.
Jackson Hill led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double, while
Xander McAfee added
two hits. The Mavericks' lone run came in the seventh when
Austin Phillips scored on a balk after reaching base and advancing into scoring position.
Dallas Baptist added three insurance runs in the eighth, scoring once on a sacrifice fly and plating two more following defensive miscues.
PITCHING PROFILE
- Jacob Havern was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in the first.
- Danny Valadez helped settle the game with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Landon Murphy turned in 2.0 shutout frames with two strikeouts to keep UTA within striking distance. Merek Sears and Nick Perry each added a scoreless inning in relief.
- Jacob Gabler worked 0.2 innings in the eighth and did not allow an earned run, with the late damage aided by defensive errors. Hayes Melville closed the inning with 1.1 scoreless innings.
- As a staff, the Mavericks limited DBU to 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position and struck out five.
