Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis falls in match with Lamar

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington men's tennis dropped its second match in three days, falling by a 5-2 margin to the Lamar Cardinals. UTA (0-7) had opportunities in a number of third-set matches, but couldn't convert enough into points.

Lamar (6-8) was given a leg up in doubles play as the Mavericks didn't have a team competing on Court 3, meaning the Cardinals needed to simply win either of Court 1 or Court 2 to take the doubles point.

UTA, however, nearly upended Lamar. The Mavericks Court 2 duo of Saúl Berdullas Calviño and Finbar McGarvey scored a quick 6-1 win, leaving the point up to the decision on Court 1.

The Cardinals' team of Leon Nickel and Maxwell Lindstedt faced UTA's team of Yazid Lahjomri and Ellison Minnaar. The bout was a dead heat and needed tiebreakers to be decided. It was there that Nickel and Lindstedt pulled away, winning tiebreakers 7-3 and allowing Lamar to escape with the doubles point.

Entering singles play, the Mavericks ceded another point on Court 6 without a player to compete. That left little margin for error and the Cardinals took advantage.

Vicente Monge picked up another point for Lamar on Court 4 in the only singles tilt that didn't go to a decisive third set, making it 3-0. On Court 5, Louis Drapeau overcame a 7-5 first set loss with 6-0 and 6-1 wins in the final two sets, defeating Novak Ivanovic to pick up the Cardinals fourth point and clinch the match.

UTA did pick up wins on Court 1 and Court 2. Berdullas Calviño lost his opening set to Lindstedt in tiebreakers, but rallied to win the next two — 6-3 and 6-2 — to pick up the win on Court 2.

Lahjomri knocked off Nickel 7-6 (7-1) in tiebreakers in his first set before dropping the second by a 6-3 margin. The junior shrugged off the defeat with a 6-4 win in the third set on Court 1, ending the match on a high note for UTA.

The Mavericks look to rebound with a midweek tilt against UTSA. The match takes place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio.
