SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UT Arlington rallied from an early four-run deficit and erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat No. 24 UTSA, 11–8, on Saturday, securing the series upset over the nationally ranked Roadrunners.
UTA totaled 15 hits and scored in five different innings, highlighted by the decisive seven-run fifth that flipped the game after UTSA built a 4–0 lead in the opening inning.
The Roadrunners struck first with four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run home run from Josh Arquette. UT Arlington answered in the third when
Xavier Melendez singled through the left side to drive in
Noah Fields, putting the Mavericks on the board.
UTA pulled within one in the fourth as
Ethan Ho delivered a two-run home run to left field, scoring
Austin Phillips and trimming the deficit to 4–3.
The Mavericks seized control in the fifth inning. Melendez opened the frame with a two-run home run to deep center, tying the game at 4–4. UT Arlington continued to pressure the UTSA pitching staff with a series of run-scoring plays, including an RBI single from
Caylon Dygert, an RBI single from
Zach Evans, an RBI walk by
Jackson Hill, a run-scoring fielder's choice from
Harold Laracuente, and a sacrifice bunt by
Noah Fields that drove in another run. The seven-run inning gave the Mavericks a 10–4 advantage.
UTSA added a solo home run from Nathan Johnson in the sixth, but the Mavericks responded in the eighth when
Austin Phillips doubled to right center to score Dygert, extending the lead to 11–5.
The Roadrunners plated three runs in the ninth on a home run from Andrew Stucky, but UT Arlington held on to close out the win.
Phillips led the Mavericks at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Melendez finished 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Ho added two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, and Evans contributed two hits and an RBI as part of UTA's 15-hit performance.
PITCHING PROFILE
- After UTSA scored four runs in the first inning, Kyle Winkler entered in relief and earned the win, working five innings while allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
- Starter Nick Perry worked the opening inning before Winkler stabilized the game through the middle frames. Zach Evans followed with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one. Hayes Melville recorded the final five outs to finish the game.
- The Maverick defense also played a key role, turning four double plays behind the pitching staff.
