Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis continues trending up, knocks off Abilene Christian

ARLINGTON, TexasUT Arlington women's tennis took down the Abilene Christian Wildcats 5-2 in the first of two scheduled regular season bouts with the Wildcats. The Mavericks play has continued to improve as the win makes it two victories in their last four dual matches after starting the spring 2-8.

Tasnime Ahamout was an X factor in the UTA (4-10) victory. The freshman competed on singles Court 5 for the first time this spring, playing against ACU's Victoria Correa. Ahamout was undaunted by the change in court, knocking Correa off in a thrilling match 7-5, 7-5.

On top of the singles win, Ahamout — along with Natalia Gonzalez — won her doubles match on Court 2. That victory came shortly after Flora Farkaslaki and Diana Kaibara upended the Wildcats duo of Jess Board and Alice Klinteby on Court 3, clinching the doubles point for the third time this spring in the Mavericks' favor.

Elsewhere in singles play, Kaibara picked up a strong, straight-set victory over ACU's Maria Cascos on Court 2. Kaibara and Ahamout's victories along with the doubles point put UTA ahead 3-1. The Wildcats lone tally to that point came on singles Court 1 where Masha Vrsalovic knocked off Elizaveta Mladentseva

While the Mavericks had a 3-1 advantage, sitting on the precipice of a clinch, the final three singles matchups came down to a decisive third set. Further building the tension, all three matches were at one point tied up at three in the final set.

Abilene Christian (7-10) kept the pressure on as Klinteby bested Gonzalez on Court 4 to make it 3-2. But it was all for naught.

Sofia Selle — who lost the opening set of her bout 6-0 — stormed back to defeat Angela Del Campo, clinching Court 3 — and the match — for the Mavericks. Selle won the final two sets 6-3 and 6-4.

Soon after, Farkaslaki knocked off ACU's Elsa Luthar on Court 6 for good measure and the Mavericks second win in 10 days was officially in the books.

UTA will look to make it two wins in a row when it takes on Cal Poly at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the UTA Tennis Center.
