Former Maverick Cade Winquest Makes Yankees’ Opening Day Roster

From UTA to Yankees Opening Day

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington baseball will be represented on Major League Baseball's Opening Day stage this season, as former Maverick right-hander Cade Winquest has earned a spot on the New York Yankees' 26-man roster.

Winquest becomes the latest Maverick to reach the game's highest level, continuing a development pipeline that runs from Clay Gould Ballpark to Major League Baseball. Before turning professional, he spent his collegiate career at UTA, where he made 46 appearances and piled up 155 strikeouts, helping anchor the Mavericks' pitching staff and showcasing the swing-and-miss arsenal that would carry into pro ball.

Since leaving Arlington, Winquest has steadily climbed through the minor leagues, most recently working 106.0 innings in the Cardinals' system in 2025 with 110 strikeouts and a 3.99 ERA to position himself for a Major League opportunity. The Yankees selected him in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft and have now committed to opening the 2026 season with the former Maverick on their big-league roster.

By Rule 5 requirement, New York must keep Winquest in the majors this season or offer him back to St. Louis, a reflection of the organization's belief in his ability to contribute immediately at the highest level. Projected to work out of the Yankees' bullpen, he brings a power arm and starter's background that were first sharpened in a UTA uniform.

Winquest's rise to an Opening Day roster spot with one of Major League Baseball's most storied franchises adds another notable chapter to the list of Mavericks who have progressed through the program and into the professional ranks.
