SAN ANTONIO – UT Arlington men's tennis is hitting the road to end the week, traveling down to San Antonio for a pair of matches on back-to-back days. The Mavericks open up the trip with a bout against the UTSA Roadrunners at 11 a.m. Thursday at the UTSA Tennis Center and end the excursion taking on the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
UTA (0-7) is coming off its first two matches since Feb. 8 over the weekend. The Mavericks dropped a Friday matchup against Wichita State 4-0 and capped off the weekend with a 5-2 loss to Lamar. UTA was a man down in each match, leading to a forfeit on Court 6 in singles play and Court 3 in doubles play.
The forfeits hurt most in doubles play in both matches as the Mavericks split the two matchups that were played in each, but couldn't secure the point because of the technical loss on Court 3.
Singles play presented UTA with several opportunities, particularly against Lamar. Four of the five singles matches between the Mavericks and Cardinals went to a decisive third set.
Yazid Lahjomri picked up a win for the Mavericks on Court 1 with a 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-4 win over Leon Nickel while Saúl Berdullas Calviño defeated Lamar's Maxwell Lindstedt 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2 in their Court 2 tilt. Lamar, however, came away with the other two third-set victories, winning on Court 3 and Court 5.
This will be the 47th all-time meeting between UTA and UTSA, with the Mavericks holding a 26-20 lead in the series. The Roadrunners have had the better of UTA as of late, however, winning the last six matches, including a 4-3 nailbiter in last season's bout.
UTA is a perfect 5-0 all time against Incarnate Word. The Mavericks defeated the Cardinals 6-1 in 2025. The tilt last season was the first meeting between the programs since 2018.
Scouting UTSA
The Roadrunners sit at 0-9 going into their bout with UTA. UTSA and the Mavericks share two common opponents in Texas A&M and Wichita State. Both teams suffered 7-0 losses to open their spring on Jan. 17 against Texas A&M while the Roadrunners lost 6-1 against Wichita State.
UTSA is led by Oskar Grzegorzewski. The sophomore has battled to a 4-4 record, competing only on Court 1 in singles play. Grzegorzewski also teams with Ben Chetewy Ungar on Court 1 in doubles play. The duo have one of the Roadrunners two doubles wins this spring.
Scouting Incarnate Word
The Cardinals enter their bout with UTA at 5-1, winning their last five matches after opening the spring with a 6-1 loss to Texas. UIW's last action saw it score four 4-0 victories in three days. The Cardinals swept Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Feb. 14 before defeating Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State on Feb. 26.
