STEPHENVILLE, Texas – UT Arlington men's basketball (16-13, 8-9 WAC) defeated Tarleton State (14-17, 5-13 WAC) by a 65-60 final on Thursday night in the penultimate game of the regular season for the Mavericks.
"We wanted to win this one for confidence going into the conference tournament," UTA head coach
KT Turner said.
UTA hung on for the victory after Tarleton State had climbed back from a 10-point deficit with just under eight minutes remaining to knot the score at 55-55 with 2:11 left. UTA had gone on an 8-0 run earlier in the stanza to build its cushion.
The Mavericks went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds, with four makes courtesy of
Bahsil Laster, to secure the victory. Until
Cash Chavis' dunk with two ticks left, UTA had not made a field goal for more than nine minutes. It was the Mavs' first road win since Jan. 15.
Chavis finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting.
Jordan Lowery had a career-high 16 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Laster was 11 of 12 from the charity stripe to account for his point total.
The Mavericks held a one-point lead, 29-28, at halftime. UTA finished the game with 24 free throws made and 24 points in the paint.
The Mavs return to action for their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Abilene Christian (13-16, 5-11 WAC). That game tips off at 6 p.m. CT from Abilene, Texas, and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the radio on the Varsity Network App with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours.
