Gonzalez named to All-WAC Second Team

ARLINGTON, TexasThe Western Athletic Conference announced its women's tennis postseason awards and all-conference teams on Thursday. Freshman Natalia Gonzalez is the lone UT Arlington player that received recognition, being named to the All-WAC second team.

Gonzalez competed across four different positions — 2-5 — for UTA in its spring dual matches. The freshman went 4-10 in her singles bouts, highlighted by a straight sets victory on Court 5 against Butler as well as wins on Court 5 against Collin College, Lubbock Christian and UT Dallas. Gonzalez worked to a 4-4 mark in the fifth position.

The freshman also played competitive matches against some of the conference's top players. Gonzalez faced Tarleton State's Marissa Minetti — an All-WAC first team member — twice this season on Court 5. Both matches were left unfinished with the UTA freshman having bested Minetti in the first set before the bouts were called off in the second.

Gonzalez also faced Abilene Christian's Victoria Correa — an All-WAC second teamer — in UTA and ACU's second regular season meeting. The UTA freshman was ahead 4-3 in a decisive third set before the match was abandoned. Gonzalez won the first set 6-1 before dropping the second by the same score.

Facing another Abilene Christian All-WAC second team honoree, Gonzalez knocked off senior Alice Klinteby 6-1 in the first set of the pairings Court 4 bout in the Mavericks and Wildcats first meeting. Klinteby, however, ultimately prevailed 6-3 and 6-4 in the final two sets.

In doubles play, Gonzalez notched a 6-9 record this spring. Her pairing with fellow freshman Tasnime Ahamout proved to be particularly effective, as the duo registered a 5-6 record competing in the second and third positions. The freshman team won WAC doubles players of the week on March 24 after defeating ACU's Correa and Angela Del Campo 6-2 on doubles Court 2.
