Mavericks improve in second round at Red Raider Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas — UT Arlington women's golf closed out the opening day of the Red Raider Invitational in 10th place after completing the first two rounds Tuesday at The Rawls Course.

The Mavericks opened the tournament with a 31-over-par 319 before bouncing back with an 18-over 306 in the second round. UTA sits at 49-over 625 through 36 holes.

UTA's 13-stroke improvement in the second round was one of the biggest positives of the day as the Mavericks look to carry the momentum into Wednesday's final round.

Texas Tech leads the 12-team field at 3-over 579 after rounds of 294 and 285. BYU sits four strokes behind the Red Raiders at 7-over 583, while Abilene Christian is third at 14-over 590.

New Mexico and Sam Houston round out the top five at 19-over and 21-over, respectively.

The Mavericks' lineup features Camilah Porras, Carmen Gonzalez Lo-A-Njoe, Chloe De Verner, Raeley Hickman and Nirjara Gulhane. Gulhane is making her first appearance in the UTA lineup this season after sitting out the season-opening Lady Clerico.

UTA entered the tournament coming off a sixth-place finish at the Lady Clerico, where Porras and Gonzalez Lo-A-Njoe each recorded top-10 finishes.

The Mavericks return to The Rawls Course for the third and final round Wednesday. The final 18 holes are scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
